The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu

Parahyangan or the Abode of The Gods is the name of districts surrounded by the green trees and the mountainous picturesque, clean air and fresh. Named Parahyangan by the “Dewa-Gods ” legend mission  from abode of the Gods before Dayang Sumbi and Sangkuriang legend happen.

Dayang Sumbi, a beautiful princes, responded the love of Sangkuriang, a handsome and sacred young man. One day when they were making love, Dayang Sumbi was badly startled to see a convinced mark in Sangkuriang’s body which indicated him that he was her own son who had long been separated from her for a long time. Dayang Sumbi let him knew the matter. But Sangkuriang who had fallen deeply in love did not mind the matter, he even regarded her only made a trumpet-up charge. At last Dayang Sumbi could not avoid Sangkuriang’s proposal to marry her, but on condition that he had to build a large dam and a giant boat, and they had to be completed in one night before the cocks crow. When he was unable to fulfill the agreement, the marriage nullified.

Sangkuriang promised her to fulfill the agreement for his desire to marry her. With his magical power and helped by supernatural creatures, Sangkuriang started to work hard  to build the dam and the boat. It still took a long time before the cocks crow, but Sangkuriang nearly completed the work. Dayang Sumbi was in a dizzy panic, because her plan to put forward the terms was to foil him to marry her, who was his own mother.

After consulting her fellow villagers, Dayang Sumbi found a way. They founded rice mortars in a noisy group while they set fire to tall coarse grass whose fire made the sky redden. Sound of the pounding rice mortars and the reddish sky deceived the cocks, they supposed morning was falling. Then they crowed continuously called back and forth.Sangkuriang was badly started, he felt it was evident that his work failed, because morning was falling marked by the cocks crowed. His anger culminated extraordinarily. With all his strengths hi kicked the nearly completed boat tossed skyward, than it fell to the earth in upside down position. Then the upside down boat transformed into a mountain in the shape of upside down the boat. Such is the most popular sundanese society’s legend and it is passed on from one generation to the other.Abode of The Gods is the place of Dayang Sumbi’s Husben and Sangkuriang’s father.
