Krakatau Volcano.
is located in the east of Lampung Province which is nine kilometers square in
diameter. A great explosion on August 27th 1883 caused this 2.000
meters above the sea level mount became inactive for about 44 years before
Mount Anak Krakatau emerged on December 1927. Krakatau (Rakata, Sertung,
Panjang) is the remain volcanoes mountain of so-called Ancient Krakatau which
has the diameter of 11 kilometers, estimated erupted and was divided into three
groups of islands in around sixth century. Krakatau appeared as an active
volcano until it reached the height of 830 meters from May up to August 1883.
Its first rather small eruption happened regularly on the top. Then eventually
on 26 and 27 August 1883, the giant eruption was happened that brought up
sounds, which could be heard in Australia, Ceylon and Philippines. At that
time, there were very huge tidal waves up to 40 meters high hit the lands
nearby and destroyed 295 villages, brought victims more than 36,000 lives
particularly surround Sunda strait and Lampung Bay Beach. The thrown material
from the volcano was approximately 18 km cubic with flying dust reached 80 km
up of sea level and caused very dark sky to entire world for 22 hours. Now, the
remain of Krakatau volcano island is only about one-third of the previous one.
