darkness giving us the idea of riding into enternity. Few other experiences
offer the sense of awe that comes from standing on Mount Bromo’s crater rim at
the time of dawn and watching the sun touch the clouds that hang over the land
down below.
The Bromo crater
stands in the middle of a “Sand Sea” a huge sand filled caldera that came into
being in the wake of a gigantic aruption in prehistoric times. A steep flight
of steps leads from the floor of the caldera to the crater rim, from which
point one looks down into the smoking, rumbling crater of the active volcano on
the one side. And the Sand Sea with the landscape beyond. The deeply turrowed
smaller cone of the exciting Mount Batok nearby amplifies the moonscape like
appearance of the surroundings.
This
alone makes a visit to Mount Bromo worth the effort. The Bromo caldera and
crater, are also the site of a curious ritual observed by the local people, the
Tengger, who come by thousands to pay homage to the Bod of Bromo by hurting
offerings into the crater. The ritual, called Kesada, is held in the tenth
month of the Javanese lunar year, under that full moon.
